Tall Wheatgrass, Alkar XL
Tall Wheatgrass, Alkar XL
Alkar XL Tall Wheatgrass is a new cultivar cool-season, perennial bunchgrass developed for forage production and reclamation in saline-alkali soils. Alkar XL is a valuable option for soil stabilization and livestock feed in challenging environments. Highly resistant to saline soils, thriving in sub-irrigated and seasonally wet locations and in areas that receive at least 14 inches of precipitation. Less palatable than other pasture grasses but useful for hay, silage and winter feed. For hay it is best to harvest it before seed heads mature. If fertilized and watered it is highly productive.

Planting Guide:
Tall wheatgrass should be planted with a drill into a firm, weed-free seed bed. The drill should be set to a depth of ½ of an inch on medium to fine textured soils and no more than 1 inch deep on coarse textured soils. Recommended seeding rates are 10 - 12 pounds per acre on non-saline soils and 15 - 18 pounds per acre on saline soils. It is usually seeded in pure stands or in mixtures with grasses also having moderate palatability. If seeded in a mix, adjust seeding rate accordingly.
