Smooth Brome, Carlton/Manchar
Smooth Brome, Carlton/Manchar
Carlton and Manchar Smooth Brome are dependable, cool-season grasses known for their excellent forage quality and winter hardiness. These varieties spread by rhizomes, creating dense sod that helps prevent erosion while providing long-lasting pasture or hay. They thrive in well-drained soils with moderate moisture and full sun, making them a strong choice for northern Utah’s growing conditions. Not recommended for irrigated or high moisture lands as Smooth Brome will get root bound and become unproductive. Ideal for livestock producers and land managers seeking a durable, nutrient-rich forage base on dryland pastures that are used in the spring and summer.
Planting Guide:
Seeding rates are typically 5-10 lbs/acre in mixtures, and about 15 lbs/acre when seeded alone. When smooth brome is seeded in a mixture with alfalfa, the alternate row method will give the best results. Seedings should be drilled at a depth of 1/4 to 1/2 inch.
